I really don't see this as an either or question. They are both critical to a system level implementation and should be applied based on the requirements of the specific use case - latency, power consumption, data bandwidth, update frequency, system level costs etc. Similarly, the appropriate RF solution - cellular, WiFi, BTLE, other will depend on a similar set of variables.
